The workshop will be held at Mystical Thoughts Shop, 1943 S Glenstone Ave, Springfield, MO 65804 on Sunday, June 9th from 2:00 - 4:00 PM.

Dive into the world of LGBTQ+ art history with this workshop series spotlighting iconic queer artists. In this first workshop, we explore the groundbreaking work of conceptual artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres, a visionary known for his thought-provoking installations exploring love, loss, and identity. In the second part of this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to engage deeply with Gonzalez-Torres's artistic philosophy by creating their own meaningful still-life compositions. There will be guided instruction throughout the still-life drawing process. Using what we've learned about the artist's approach, we'll explore how everyday objects can carry profound symbolism and emotion.

About Artist, Felix Gonzalez-Torres:

We will begin the workshop by discovering the world of conceptual art as we explore the groundbreaking work of Felix Gonzalez-Torres. Through an art historical lens, we'll delve into Gonzalez-Torres's life, his influences, and the profound motivations behind his art. Discover how his thought-provoking pieces challenged conventional notions of identity, love, and loss within the LGBTQ+ community and beyond.

Art Project: Tying Meaning to Everyday Objects – Still Life Drawing

In the second half of the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to engage deeply with Gonzalez-Torres's artistic philosophy by creating their own meaningful still-life compositions, with guided instruction. Using what we've learned about the artist's approach, we'll explore how everyday objects can carry profound symbolism and emotion.

Objective:

Participants will use their understanding of Gonzalez-Torres's art, gathered during the first segment of the workshop, to imbue their still-life drawings with deeper meaning. By selecting and arranging objects in their compositions, they'll explore themes of identity, memory, and loss. Through their drawing style, participants will convey the emotions associated with each object, echoing Gonzalez-Torres's emotive and evocative work.

Materials Included:

  • Drawing paper

  • Drawing pencils

  • Erasers (standard and kneaded)

  • Blending stumps

  • Still life set-up
