The workshop will be held at Mystical Thoughts Shop, 1943 S Glenstone Ave, Springfield, MO 65804 on Tuesday, June 25th from 6:00 - 8:00 PM.

Dive into the world of LGBTQ+ art history with this workshop series spotlighting iconic queer artists. In this second workshop, we will explore the vibrant world of Keith Haring, an iconic artist known for his bold lines, bright colors, and dynamic symbolism. Participants will gain insight into Haring's life, his artistic journey, and the socio-political messages conveyed through his work. We will discuss his distinctive style and recurring motifs such as dancing figures, radiant babies, and barking dogs. This workshop will also explore the broader concept of symbolism in art and how it can be a powerful tool for personal expression. During the second half of the workshop, is where you will use your new knowledge of symbolism to create your own artistic language to express your personal journey and identity.

About the Artist: Keith Haring

We will start by learning about Keith Haring, including his background, his rise to fame in the New York City street culture of the 1980s, and his influence on pop art and graffiti. We will discuss his distinctive style and recurring motifs such as dancing figures, radiant babies, and barking dogs. Throughout this discussion, we will also delve into the role of symbolism in art and how artists use symbols to communicate deeper meanings. By exploring examples of symbolism in Haring's work, we will discuss the socio-political contexts that inspired him. We will then investigate why Haring created the art he did, focusing on his activism and the messages he aimed to convey through his work.

Art Project: The Language of Artistic Symbolism 

Participants will have time to brainstorm and design their own symbols that represent aspects of their identity, experiences, and values. Using these symbols, they will create an artwork that visually communicates their unique narrative. Through this process, participants will understand the significance of Keith Haring's art and his influence on contemporary art and culture, explore the use of symbolism as a means of personal expression in art, and create a personalized artwork that uses symbolic language to convey individual stories and identities.

Objective: Use the knowledge gained about Haring and symbolism in art to create your own artistic language. Develop and use symbols to craft a piece of art that tells your personal story.
