Mural Design and Installation Art Course for Teens
Class Dates: Wednesdays 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM, February 26th - March 19th
Mural Installation Dates: Thursdays from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM April 4th, 9th, and 17th

Location: Classes will take place at Forming Art Studios at 330 South Avenue, Springfield, Missouri 65806. The studio is located in a black brick building on the corner of South and Walnut. Mural installation will take place at the Cooper Tennis Complex located at 2331 E Pythian St, Springfield, Missouri 65802.
This mural painting course is in partnership with the Springfield-Greene County Park Board where, after the four-week course, participating students will work together, with guidance, to install a mural for the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Missouri. Students will receive guidance on creating and developing their own mural design, as well as learn the information and tools they will need to put into practice to paint a mural. While all students will design their own concepts for the mural project, the Springfield-Greene County Park Board will be responsible for choosing a final mural design which will be used to paint the mural at the Cooper Tennis Complex. At the end of the four-week course, students will work over three-weeks to install the final mural painting design on site.
Students will have time to work on their mural design submissions during each class, but they will be encouraged to also work on their submissions in their own time to ensure they are confident in their design.
Course Breakdown
Week 1: Understanding Mural Design & Brainstorming Concepts
Introduction to the Springfield-Greene County Park Board’s mural project requirements.
Analyze professional murals to understand composition, message, and style.
Generate a theme through collaborative brainstorming and guided exercises.
Begin sketching initial concepts.
Week 2: Developing Mural Compositions
Learn the fundamentals of how to install a mural painting.
Explore what makes a fun and engaging mural composition.
Refine mural sketches and begin working towards final mural design submissions.
Week 3: Painting Techniques & Finalizing Mural Design Submissions
Introduction to mural painting tools, including brushes and paint types.
Learn applicable techniques and principles in painting that will be applied to mural installation.
Finalize mural designs for submission.
Submission Deadline: Thursday, March 13th, 2025
Week 4: Preparing for Installation & Winner Announcement
The Springfield-Greene County Park Board announces the winning design that will be used as a reference for the final mural painting.
Learn the mural painting process and prepare for mural installation which will occur at Cooper Tennis Complex on Saturdays, April 5th, 12th and 19th, from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM.
Discuss proper care that should be taken at the facility during mural installation.
Mural Installation Period
The selected mural will be installed over three weeks, with students assisting in the painting process.

Location: Cooper Tennis Complex
